The radio reported Wednesday that the flight recorders of the Boeing 737 which crashed last week in the Potomac River have been recovered. They may give some information which will help solve the mystery of why the plane crashed. PM Magazine of WLOS-TV was in Tryon Wednesday. A lunch hour explosion in Spencer, Okla. Tuesday killed five children and a teacher, and 35 were injured. The Tryon Elementary School auditorium remodelling is nearing completion, and it is certainly an improvement. Jackie Sherrill, who guided Pittsburgh to an 11-1 record last season resigned Tuesday to become head coach and athletic director at Texas A&M. The Upstairs Gallery in Tryon will have WAZ as its guest artist Friday at 8 p.m. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon is the Tryon Federal Savings open house at their Columbus office. Saturday at 8 p.m. “Those Were The Days” will be at The Continued On Back Page Two Wrecks Highway Patrolman C. T. “Butch” Kennedy investigated two single vehicle accidents Tuesday morning. At 6:45 a.m. Rhonda Thompson of Rt. 2, Mill Spring, driving a 1982 AMC vehicle wrecked on Silver Creek Road near Sam Searcy’s cloth shop. Ms. Thompson was headed toward Mill Spring when the car hit an icy spot and went off the road on the left and struck an embankment. The car had considerable damage and Ms. Thompson was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where she was treated and released. At 8:10 a.m. a tractor trailer driven by Samuel Corn of Horse Shoe wrecked at the junction of Hwy. 108 and Big Level Road at Pea Ridge. The tractor trailer, loaded with wood chips was coming out of the Big Level Road onto Hwy. 108 when the rear tandem of the truck came out from under the truck and the rear end hit the highway and tipped the truck to the left and it toppled on its side in the east bound lane. The truck had considerable damage and Mr. Corn was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was treated and released. The first of several crochet classes to be taught at the Landrum Library by Mrs. Myrtle Komant will be held tonight (Thursday) from 6:45 until 8:45. Those who have registered will need to bring a number G or F crochet hook and four-ply yarn. Gets Life Edney Alvin Whitesides, 25, of Tryon who was charged with the murder of Steven Eric Faggart, 18, of Tryon, pled guilty to second degree murder Tuesday at Superior Court in Columbus. Judge Robert W. Kirby sentenced him to life in prison. St. Valentine Dinner-Dance The Landrum High School Athletic Boosters Club will have its fourth annual St. Valentine Dinner-Dance on Sat., Feb. 6th. A spokesman for the club said that there would be no price increase and there would be the same food. The Music Makers of Tryon will play. For ticket information contact Joe Humphries, Robert Inman or Joe Brown. Tryon High School Is Re-Accredited Superintendent Vernon L. Dusenbury has been notified that Tryon High School has been re- accredited by the Southern Association of College and Schools. Action was taken at the annual meeting of SACS held in Dallas, Texas on December 7, 1981. Member schools must be evaluated on an annual basis and must document school improvements each year. Tryon High School has completed its tenth year of accreditation by the Southern Association. Tryon Elementary Is Re-Accredited Superintendent Vernon L. Special Meeting Today at 5 p.m. There will be a special meeting of the Polk County Commissioners today at 5 p.m. in the Courthouse annex. There is one item on the agenda — to approve contract for USDA Cheese distribution. All parents of preschoolers are invited to bring their youngsters in to sign up.
